New Hip Hop poster. The 19th century Welsh rap movement has been largely overlooked by cultural historians. It has its roots in Cross Hands in Carmarthenshire, where drovers, en route from Carmarthen to London, became disillusioned with the strictures of reciting poetry accompanied by a harp. This example of Welsh ‘flow’ was found on a scrap of vellum in Heol Ddu farm in Carmarthen. A contemporary Americanised version can be heard on the Sugar Hill Gang’s Rapper’s Delight record from 1979.
